Join us as we begin our journey exploring Emperor Constantine the Great, the man who transformed Rome's religious beliefs from Paganism to Christianity. The conversion of Constantine changed the Christian landscape immeasurably. Before a battle with Maxentius in 306AD, Constantine believed he saw a cross shape in the sky from God, and heard the words "By this sign you shall conquer". He took this as a sign to convert to Christianity. This event would lead to the persecution of God’s faithful believers from within the church, and the beginning of a clear distinction between the two branches of Christianity that would emerge. The emperor became a great patron of the Church, and set a precedent for the position of the Christian emperor within the Church. In episode 2, we explore the work of St Columba, the great missionary and trainer of missionaries. St Columba was originally from Ireland and worked there for many years; he was credited with raising over 300 churches. He continued this work overseas and set sail to Iona, Scotland in the year 563 with 200 of his companions. St Columba set up a school on this small barren and windswept island that had a great impact and become a central training point of the Celtic Church for several centuries. In episode 3, we explore the work of St Aidan. By the request of King Oswald of Northumbria, he travelled from Iona, Scotland to Lindisfarne, also known as the Holy Island. St Aidan set up his training school here and made this the base of mission operations in England, in the 7th century. St Aidan was succeeded by Finan, who set up a training school in Essex. Finan was then succeeded by Colman. These three men would convert almost three quarters of England in under 50 years. Collectively, they did for England, what St Columba did for Scotland. In this episode, the tide turns as we explore Whitby Synod. In Yorkshire, England, Celtic Christianity was the dominant faith. This was due to the missionary work of St Aidan, who had been sent over from Iona, Scotland. However, 664 A.D. was a pivotal point where crucial decisions were made, such as the date for Easter. Colman was overruled and left England to return to the Isle of Iona, this then followed with four dark centuries for England. Later, the Danish Vikings swept through England further affecting the future of Christianity in the British Isles, turning the tide away from Celtic Christianity as Paganism returned. Join us as we travel from Iona to Wales, where Dinooth set up another training school in Bangor-on-Dee. Dinooth was trained by Columba and later used much of what he learned in evangelising Wales. Columba was trained in Bangor and travelled to set up a school in France. No longer did the youth of the land have to travel to Ireland, Scotland or Wales to receive missionary training - but in Europe they could receive an education of the highest standard. This then progressed to Switzerland, Germany and Italy, Bobbio, setting up Reformation schools along the way. Continuing our journey through history, we explore Revelation 12:6 - the Church in the Wilderness - through the experience of the Waldensians. The Waldensians didn't see themselves as reformers needing to be separate to Rome, as they said that they never belonged to it. They have a history dating back several centuries prior to the time of the Apostolic faith. Over the next couple of episodes, we will visit the valleys that they called home, and see where they lived and died. They then saw their faithfulness and commitment to mission and service for God. Next, we explore the life of the Waldenses in the higher valleys. They fled the lower valleys to avoid persecution, and tried to establish a normal life from then on. However, their normal meant training missionaries, and tutoring the young on how to study and teach the bible in a harsh and unforgiving terrain. Through their well-trained children, younger people, and older people, they impacted the whole continent, spreading the gospel throughout Europe as missionaries ‘disguised’ as students and workers. Here, we seek to understand the Waldensian motto 'Lux Lucet in Tenebris', which translates to 'A Light out of Darkness'. The Waldensians taught young people in training schools, places of worship, and sometimes, in caves. They were often hunted and persecuted, and would have to retreat into the bowels of the earth for protection. Despite being scattered among the mountains, they would still find time to worship together in the shelter of caves - even in the darkness of these spaces, their light shone brightly. Now, we explore the Albigensians. Much like the Waldensians who remained true to God's word, the Albigensians had a similar faith based in Southern France. During the reign of Pope Innocent III, at the start of the 13th century, numerous groups were persecuted, and in particular the Albigensians. Over a 20-year period, the Pope attempted to wipe out the faithful, Bible believing worshippers in Southern France. In this episode, we explore the legacy of John Wycliffe - someone who has often been referred to as the Morning Star of the Reformation. We travel to Lutterworth, which was John's workplace, and where he completed his most significant work - uncovering the great impact that he had on the Reformation. Educated at Oxford University, Wyliffe was a scholar, and an unrivalled debater. It was whilst he was a student that he first incurred the displeasure of Rome. He went on to take the reference 'Morning Star', which suggested that he was a reformer before the term became popular. He stood alone as a voice of change, and called people back to the Bible.
